Scientific Name: Streptocarpus ionantha (formerly Saintpaulia ionantha)

African Violets became commercially popular as a houseplant in the 1920s, and has remained a staple for indoor plant collections ever since. These plants have adorable dark green rounded, fuzzy leaves and delicate blooms. They come in a variety of colors and color combinations from pink to magenta to purple & white, which makes them even more fun to collect!
African Violets are a little sensitive, but are ultimately relatively easy to care for. They prefer bright indirect light, but no direct light, this will burn the plant!
They absolutely hate getting their leaves and blooms wet, so these are one of the few plants we recommend true bottom-watering for. Because of their super compact growth pattern, it's difficult to water from the top effectively without getting the foliage or blooms wet, and that can cause "crown rot". African Violets need to have consistently moist soil without drying out or being too soggy. You can also fertilize during the growing months to promote reblooming.
Bottom watering: Place the plant in a saucer or dish filled 1-2" deep with water for 30-45 minutes. African Violets don't like to completely dry out, but can be susceptible to root rot, so don't overwater. In an indoor environment, approximately once a week is sufficient, generally when the first inch or so of soil feels dry.
***Due to the unique nature of plants, the one we carefully choose for you won't look exactly like the photos. but it will be just as beautiful!
